What's a "Ten Gallon Hat"?

Before the birth of this blog, I didn't know what a ten gallon hat was. Yes, I am a true city girl. Mr. TPG, on the other hand, claims that everyone knows what a ten gallon hat is. That's the Texan in him talking.

So for my city dwellers, a ten gallon hat is apparently a reference to a large cowboy hat. See:

Howdy, partner. My hat holds ten gallons, does yours?

Growing up in Northern California, I knew Carson City, Nevada was close to Lake Tahoe and all of the ski resorts where we spent winter weekends.  I didn't know of its "wild west" roots or reputation.  Carson City started out as a mining town, I believe, and became the capital of Nevada.  The area has been featured in Western-themed television shows and movies such as Bonanza (for my older readers) and Shanghai Noon (for the younger crowd).  This city-raised Two Pint Girl will be learning a new way of life, and hopefully will find a home in the Ten Gallon Hat.
